Green Campus Initiative
Several years ago, Woodridge School District 68 decided to convert a portion of two school sites to permeable pavers. Frost heave of the concrete sidewalks near the schools, and the cost of maintaining the asphalt drove the District to look at alternatives. The success of those two pilot projects gave rise to the Green Campus Initiative.
The Green Campus Initiative was a multi-year program to convert the parking lots from asphalt to permeable pavers, create outdoor classrooms, and relieve stormwater management and flooding issues at all seven schools. Woodridge 68 utilized a number of grants to bring initial costs below less environmentally-friendly options, and the long-term savings continue to be realized.
Woodridge 68 continues to seek out and pursue opportunities for sustainable and eco-friendly buildings and grounds projects.
