    What is a School Counselor?

School Counselors play an important role in helping all students achieve academic and personal success. Their services and programs help students resolve social, emotional or behavioral problems and help them develop a clearer focus or sense of direction. Effective counseling programs are important to the school climate and are a crucial element in improving student achievement. Counselors in the 21st century are highly trained educators in pre-K-12 settings who uphold ethical and professional standards to design, implement, and manage comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling programs that promote and enhance student success. School Counselors are certified or licensed professionals who possess a Masters degree or higher in school counseling, meet the state certification/licensure standards, and abide by the laws of the states in which they are employed.
