School improvement plan

The Murphy School Improvement Plan focuses on:

Goal : 

•  Implement systematic and explicit academic vocabulary instruction practices in all classrooms, resulting in 90% of teachers consistently using a variety of vocabulary exposure strategies , and measurable increases in student vocabulary academic growth, confidence, and engagement

Success criteria:

• At least 90% of classroom teachers consistently implement different evidence-based vocabulary exposure techniques, as measured by classroom observations, fidelity rubrics, and/or self-report surveys

• There is a statistically significant increase in student engagement and confidence, as evidenced by teacher-shared stories of student impact and the positive trends on the classroom walkthrough scoreboard

• Students demonstrate measurable academic growth in vocabulary acquisition, as evidenced by increased scores on formative and summative assessments, specifically showing improvement in Winter and Spring iReady data and on the Spring IAR data (vocab standards)

Focusing in on lesson vocabulary exposures during lessons will......

• Increase student confidence during the lesson
• Raise student engagement during a lesson
• Reduce student cognitive load
• Improve student reading comprehension and student writing skills
• Promote equity amongst learners

Activities / Strategies:

• Staff analyze different types of vocabulary exposure techniques
• Staff build a bridge between vocabulary exposures throughout Gradual Release of Responsibility framework
• Staff identify key building vocabulary exposures that all staff should use (basic  - advanced)
• Staff utilize words outside of the classroom
• Staff leverage word relationships
